About Us
Belmont Residence offers a safe environment for minimally intellectually challenged adults who might otherwise be marginalised today. Several residents work in protected employment workshops where they are provided with a sense of purpose and routine. At retirement, residents can enjoy activities such as walking to local shops, visiting tea rooms, or spending time with family and friends in our garden or on outings.
We have the support of a qualified Social Worker from Cape Mental Health who regularly visits Belmont Residence to assist residents, their families, and our House Mother. An annually elected voluntary Management Committee ensures that Belmont Residence is maintained in excellent condition, that outings are organised, and that fundraising, staff supervision, and budgeting runs smoothly. The Management Committee is made up of family members as well as committed local Capetonians.
Family involvement is encouraged at Belmont Residence. The participation of family members in the wellbeing of their loved ones is invaluable. Outings, braais, supper evenings, and celebrations organised by the Committee and families are cherished highlights throughout the year.

Belmont Club Activities in the early days
Next, the indomitable Val created a team of mothers around her. Hours of work, publicity, fundraising, and awareness resulted in the purchase of a large family home in Kenilworth. Here men and women could become accustomed to life away from their parental home. Four of the original Club Members still reside here. Today the Social Club no longer exists but Belmont remains testimony to Val’s work which she continued until the week of her death in 2022 aged 96. Thanks to Val’s half-a-century-long dedication, Belmont remains a Member of the Western Cape Forum for Intellectual Disability and is listed on the Western Cape Website for Residential Facilities.
Events
50th Anniversary Lunch Celebration
Belmont Care Centre celebrated its 50th year in November 2024. Founded in 1974 by parents concerned for the long-term future of their special children, Belmont has served several generations. Today two residents at Belmont House were teenagers who joined all those years ago.
A sumptuous luncheon was enjoyed by Belmont House residents, friends, and family at La Grotto Restaurant in Constantia. In speeches and poetry, memories were touched on, and thanks were given to the founders and present-day staff and volunteers.
Game Drive Day Out
On a Spring Day in October, we drove to Villiera Wine farm near Stellenbosch, to enjoy their spectacular Game Drive. Villiera was incredibly generous, making this a donation to Belmont.
The day started misty but soon warmed up with lovely views. Animals were knee deep in lush green grass; the many water holes were full after the winter rains; the bird song was fabulous and lent a peacefulness to each stop we made, sitting quietly watching and listening. Our guide and driver was exceptionally informative. We learnt a great deal, and we all enjoyed spotting the game. .
